Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to lead our accounting and financial operations. This individual will be responsible for all aspects of the accounting department, including job cost, payroll, contracts, accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial assets, financial reporting and special project needs through direct oversight of the Accounting Department. The Controller also supervises and manages all IT issues with outside consultant support. Prior industry experience is required, and this position reports directly to the CFO of the company.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accounting: Implement accounting internal controls and procedures with senior management collaboration; oversee accounting staff to ensure receivable billings and vendor payments are processed timely with proper compliance documentation.

  • Month-End Close: Oversee the month-end and year-end close processes, producing timely financial statements.

  • Treasury: Manage, record, and reconcile investment and checking activity; monitor and forecast cash flow needs.

  • Payroll and Benefits: Payroll is processed in-house; the Controller must understand payroll well enough to back up the Payroll Specialist. File all required payroll tax returns. Proactively research and implement tax and benefit regulatory requirements.

  • Tax: Research and advise management on state contractor tax law. Work with external CPA to file income and corporate tax returns. Oversee sales tax filings.

  • IT: Manage user issues for office network. Work with outside IT service provider. Manage IT equipment acquisitions. Identify opportunities to streamline accounting workflows through improved systems, automation, AI tools, reporting templates, and technology-driven process improvements.

  • Accounting Software: Manage financial and accounting software (Trimble Viewpoint Vista) used by the company, manage licensing, and archive files and ensure monthly balance between all modules.

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare internal monthly financial statements; Perform quarterly accounting analysis and coordinate annual review engagement with outside CPA firm.

  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with GAAP, local/state/federal tax filings and corporate audits. Prepare quarterly tax returns; Oversee IFTA/Fuel reporting.

Qualifications

  • 8 years of progressive accounting/finance leadership experience, preferably in a Controller or Assistant Controller role in cost / construction accounting.

  • Must have solid knowledge of WIP reporting.

  • Candidate should be proactive and interested in improving processes while maintaining checks and balances and fraud prevention.

  • Must be a strong leader who also works well in a team environment.

  • Construction accounting: 5 years (Required)

  • Cost accounting: 5 years (Required)

  • Experience dealing with banks and financial institutions

  • Work with Senior Management and Operations Managers to ensure financial directives are followed

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Strong knowledge of Excel required
